The weather has been CRISP this November. It's time to start wearing the extra thick socks. With a few days being the exception, Southeast Alaska has treated us to some amazing views.
We've been pretty busy with prepping for Business Basics in Utqiagvik in cooperation with Alaska Growth Capital, as well as partnering with Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes to offer some Business Basics courses to Tlingit and Haida tribal members (See below).

Join us for our highly-reviewed training and get support to transform your fledgling idea into a full-grown business venture.
Spruce Root and Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indians of Alaska are pleased to hold an exclusive, in-person Path to Prosperity Business Basics for Artists program.
You must be a Tlingit and Haida citizen to participate.
The T&H Business Basics Alaska Native Artists workshop is two full days of in-person training in Juneau, Alaska, for T&H-citizen entrepreneurs interested in starting their own businesses. The program will be January 25-26, 2023.
The T&H Business Basics for Alaska Native Artists is an interactive, online workshop designed for Southeast Alaskans who are looking to launch a business. Whether you have an idea that you’re looking to turn into a business or a side project you are looking to expand, this workshop will give you the knowledge, tools, and connections needed to build a successful business that benefits the community, the environment, and the economy.
Entrepreneurs who complete Business Basics will gain a greater understanding of the fundamentals to start or grow an early-stage business and will be introduced to additional resources to continue growing their business.
You will learn strategies and tools for:
- Marketing & Pricing Your Art
- Branding & Customer Discovery
- Business Planning
- Financial Projections
- Legal Entities, Tax Tips and Contracting
Participation is limited, so apply now at spruceroot.org/businessbasics. Applications are now open for the T&H Business Basics for Artists workshop and close at 11:59 PM on Thursday, December 15.
The training and food during the workshop will be provided free of charge. Participants will be responsible for their own evening meals, accommodations and transportation. Out-of-town participants may apply for an accommodations scholarship. The training will take place at Generations Southeast (formerly called the Vocational Center near Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau, Alaska).
Start-up grants of up to $2,500 are available to Tlingit & Haida tribal citizens who complete this program and submit their business plan and other required documents to T&H. Please go to spruceroot.org/businessbasics for more details.
If an in-person gathering is deemed unsafe due to COVID, then the training may shift to a virtual format.

Sustainable Southeast Partnership Deputy Director Marina Anderson was invited to attend a reception for the first Indigenous Peoples Month celebration at the White House.
"It was a room full of Indigenous people from Alaska all the way to Florida," ICT reporter Pauly Denetclaw wrote in her article.

First Alaskans Institute holds
Smokehouse Gala 2022

On November 19, 2022, FAI held its Smokehouse Gala at the Dena'ina Center in Anchorage, Alaska.
The fundraiser benefits Alaska Native arts and culture by supporting youth, Elders and communities throughout Alaska.

Marina Anderson was invited to be an artist-in-action, creating a multi-dimensional, multimedia painting that was later auctioned to raise money for First Alaskans Institute.
