The Spruce Root Business & Balance course supports business ideas in Southeast Alaska that seek to increase local employment, have a positive social and economic impact on local communities, and promote sustainable use of local resources. Business & Balance will increase key business skills and leadership in Southeast Alaska and beyond.
Why Business & Balance
Who is eligible to Register?
We welcome Individuals, for-profit businesses, and tribal entities that have or intend to have a significant operating presence in Southeast Alaska. Business ideas may include a new business or an expansion of an existing business. Note that 501(c)3 nonprofits are not eligible. Applicants must be Southeast Alaska residents.
We especially encourage applications from entrepreneurs who are Indigenous, Black, people of color, and/or who are located in rural Southeast Alaska (outside of Juneau, Ketchikan or Sitka).
When do registrations close?
Registrations are due by 11:59 p.m. Alaska Time on August 31, 2023.
What is the cost?
The cost of this course is $200. Any applicant that finds the fee to be a financial burden may request a waiver by emailing grow@spruceroot.org.
why should I apply?
Participants will emerge from the course with a detailed regenerative business plan; connections to experienced mentors excited to help you succeed; a plan to find balance and support for you, your business, your community and your environment; essential resources to develop a strong team and build a positive work culture; an understanding of how to “build wealth”; and the fundamentals of personal finance.
What is the time commitment for the workshop?
The course will be held in two-hour sessions from 9-11 a.m. on Fridays for nine weeks.

Are nonprofits eligible?
No, only for-profit businesses are eligible to participate in this course.
